Drunk drivers may fare better in accidents

Do you ever feel like, in a drunk driving accident, it is the other person – and not the drunk driver who caused the crash — who fares worse? Maybe you got injured in a crash that the drunk driver walked away from without a scratch. Maybe you spent months in the hospital while they seemed to recover right away. It feels unfair.

You’re not biased and you’re not imagining things. Studies have found that alcohol does have an impact on injuries. Some have suggested that drunk drivers are not as rigid at the time of the crash, for instance, and that being loose and unresponsive actually helps them avoid injuries.

On top of that, one study claimed that a higher blood-alcohol level appeared to increase the odds that someone would survive once they arrived at the medical center with serious injuries. And, while one drink can help, more drinks may actually help even more. “The drunker a victim is,” reports claimed, “the more likely he or she is to survive.”

This is not, by any stretch of the imagination, to excuse drunk driving. The very alcohol that may help save the person’s life is also what caused the crash. Had they not had anything to drink, it wouldn’t have occurred at all, and their life wouldn’t have needed saving. Others wouldn’t have been injured.

That said, it is interesting to see why drunk drivers have a reputation for living through the crashes they cause.
