Tips for driving in heavy traffic on Interstate 10

Everyone in this area knows that I-10 can turn into a nightmare when it’s busy, especially around Essen Lane and the never-ending construction zone closer to the I-12 split. Pick a lane

It might be tempting to try to move over to a lane that is moving a little faster than the one you are in. Swerving in and out of lanes can be dangerous when there is a traffic jam or slow moving traffic. Instead, remember that there are very few times, such as when an accident is blocking a lane, that you will have to change lanes. Sticking to your lane can help the flow of traffic so that everyone can get to where they need to go.

Focus on your driving

Just because you are moving slowly doesn’t mean that you need to focus on things other than your driving. In fact, it can be just as dangerous to drive while distracted when you are in a traffic jam as it is when you are driving at regular speeds. The close proximity to other vehicles can mean you will strike one or one will strike you quickly.

Avoid tailgating

You can’t tailgate even though you are in slow or stalled traffic. Leave enough room between you and the vehicle in front of you so that you can stop if you need to.
