Police pursuit ends with deadly accident

A high-speed pursuit ended in tragedy in Louisiana on the evening of Oct. 26 when a Chevrolet Camaro that had been reported stolen crashed head-on into a Ford Mustang near Baton Rouge. Both of the drivers were killed. Two 18-year-old women and a 4-year-old child who were traveling in the Camaro were transported to a local hospital with what were described as critical injuries.

Stolen car report

The pursuit began when officers from the New Roads Police Department spotted a Chevrolet Camaro that matched the description of a stolen vehicle. The Camaro’s owner had contacted the NRPD because he believed the car had been taken by somebody who lived in the area. The NRPD officers called Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office for assistance when the Camaro refused to pull over. The Pointe Coupee, East Feliciana, West Feliciana and East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Offices, East Baton Rouge Police Department and the Louisiana State Police also responded. At one time, vehicles from three law enforcement agencies were chasing the car.

Head-on collision

Efforts to stop the car by setting up roadblocks and deploying spike strips were unsuccessful. Police decided to call off the pursuit when the Camaro began to approach Baton Rouge, but the 17-year-old man behind the wheel crashed before they could. According to media reports, the Camaro drove across a ditch median on Scenic Highway and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.
