Despite the glut of anti-drunk driving campaigns, tragic stories and plain common sense, people still choose to get behind the wheel intoxicated. It’s dangerous, it’s illegal and it puts the driver and everyone else on the road at risk. Oftentimes, that risk becomes reality and an accident occurs, as it did in early January here in Louisiana.
One man was heading down I-10 near Baton Rouge when he was hit head-on by another driver, who was traveling the wrong way down the road. Police suspect the wrong-way driver of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The victim was rushed to the hospital for treatment and finally succumbed to his injuries after fighting for several days.
The accused drunk driver’s actions also claimed another victim. A passerby stopped his car to help the injured drivers when an 18-wheeler slammed into the vehicles, pinning and killing him.
That’s two lives lost, and two families who now have to deal with the devastating consequences of losing a loved one. On top of the emotions, they may have to face financial struggles as they encounter medical bills, funeral costs and lost wages.
No family should have to deal with these tragedies alone. An experienced attorney can explore every avenue to get the victims the compensation they need to carry on, whether that means conducting their own investigation into the crash or fighting an insurance company that’s not doing its part. If you’ve lost a loved one because of a drunk driver, you may want to contact an attorney to explore your options.
