The National Safety Council strongly supports defensive driving, noting that it can prevent accidents and save lives. They believe that drivers should focus on constant awareness so that they can react quickly to hazards and keep their distance from dangerous drivers.

At the same time, they acknowledge that many drivers make poor decisions on the road. Human error, after all, is the top cause of car crashes. Some of the deadly decisions they highlight in their safety course include:

  • Violating another driver’s right of way
  • Breaking the speed limit
  • Distracted driving
  • Driving across the center line
  • Making improper turns
  • Tailgating or following too closely

Some of these issues could all happen at once, leading to a string of poor decisions that causes a crash.

For instance, imagine that a driver misses a turn on the way to work and realizes that they’re going to be late for work. They make an illegal U-turn, violating another driver’s right of way and cutting them off.

They then get distracted by the GPS as it tries to recalculate where they need to go. When they get turned around, they start rushing, breaking the speed limit. This causes them to catch up to the next car, and they tailgate that driver to get them to go faster.

All of these decisions could lead to a crash on their own. When made together, they are exceedingly dangerous.

Even if you are aware of the risks, you can still suffer injuries in an accident caused by a dangerous driver. Make sure you know exactly what legal steps to take.
