Motorists across the state and throughout the U.S. share the streets and highways with commercial vehicles every day. Unfortunately, sometimes collisions involving cars and these large trucks occur. Due to the size and weight differences between the vehicles, the drivers and passengers of these smaller vehicles often bear the most serious effects of these accidents.

Taking certain precautions may help passenger vehicle drivers avoid potentially serious or deadly crashes with large trucks.

Allow enough space

According to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety, motorists often benefit from giving truckers a wide berth when sharing the roads. Tractor-trailers typically require longer stopping distances, as well as more space to safely turn. Allowing an extra buffer around these vehicles aids in preventing some crushing, rear-end and other wrecks.

Prepare for turbulence

Particularly in windy conditions, commercial vehicles sometimes create turbulence. These wind gusts sometimes cause other drivers to swerve or otherwise lose control of their automobiles. Anticipating such issues, including holding the wheel tightly with both hands, assists some motorists in maintaining the safe operation of their cars.

Avoid the blind spots

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, drivers should use care to stay out of large trucks’ blind spots. Truckers often have areas of limited or no visibility along both sides, as well as around the front and rear of their vehicles. A good rule of thumb for motorists to keep in mind – if they cannot see the truck operator in the side mirrors, the truck operators likely cannot see them.

Trucking accidents often cause serious injuries for those involved. However, depending on the circumstances, the at-fault trucker, trucking company or others may bear financial responsibility for these injuries and their associated costs.
